WHY WE DO IT
WHY WE DO IT
We were born on the housing crisis frontline
We were born on the housing crisis frontline
Stepping Homes was built out of the experience of Fraser. A builder who volunteered to serve coffee to the homeless.
On a cold January evening, when Fraser had started to serve at the shelter, he met a small group of other volunteers. In silence, they prepared for what lay ahead. Too many people had nowhere else to go. It was here or the streets. At 9pm, as the queue wrapped around the building, the doors opened.
It didn't take long to learn that these were normal people, foreign people, fleeing people. Some of them were articulate and others spoke through gestures. Almost all were friendly and strangers became friends.
Across the city, resources strained but the need continued to grow. The same faces appeared and new ones arrived. Night after night, compassion met frustration. As the days became weeks and weeks became months, the problem got worse. Disappointment replaced hope. No homes were available.
Then the funding ran out and the shelter closed for the year. Good people were now on the streets - hopeless. There had to be a solution.
Stepping Homes is that solution. Our mission is to create homes for the homeless. To help us on that journey, we benefit everyone involved:
We create more accommodation for housing associations.
We deliver value and profit to letting agents, landlords and investors.
We relieve pressure from local authorities.
Everyone deserves a home.
That's what Stepping Homes is for.
